The Domain is a large stretch of green grass to the south of Sydney's central business district. It is easy to access on foot, from the city area, and is located near Macquarie Street and many historic buildings like Parliament House and Sydney Hospital. The uses of this area vary, but it is most well-known as an outdoor venue for large music concerts and cultural events, including the film festival Trop Fest, Christmas Carols by Candlelight, and the Australian music festival called Homebake.
The area is able to be fenced off, to provide a venue that sells tickets, or it can be left open for public events that are free for anyone to join in. A word of warning though, if you intend to participate in an event at Sydney's Domain, get there early because the crowds come in fast and you could be left up the back without a patch of grass to yourself and a view of the stage.
The Domain demonstrates a huge part of Australian culture that sees locals getting outdoors with their family and friends, especially in the summer months. If you are attending an event at night in The Domain, you'll need a large picnic rug, an Esky, and some sumptuous food to share with those around you.
These events are very social, and you'll find yourself meeting new people, swapping stories, and enjoying the moment together. Many families bring in a large amount of equipment, including low-seated deckchairs, wicker picnic baskets, and even decorations. If you are enjoying a music festival during the day, The Domain will become bright with multi-coloured costumes, large hats and young people dressing up in outlandish and creative clothes.
Expect a long line to the bar, if alcoholic drinks are served, and the same for the portable toilets which may not be very clean if thousands of people have used them beforehand. Most importantly though, remember to take a hat, lots of water and apply sunscreen regularly throughout the day. The Australian heat is harsh, and The Domain is an open space that catches a lot of it.
