In the early days of Sydney Surry Hills was the a leafy area where big mansions were built but then declined into a slum area. Now transformed into a dynamic inner city suburb with art galleries, restaurants, pubs and coffee shops.
Crown Street is the centre of Surry Hills with cafes, restaurants, fashion and shops. The Surry Hills Shopping Village is on Cleveland Street.
Surry Hills Markets are held in Shannon Reserve at the corner of Crown and Collins Streets, on the first Saturday of every month.
Surry Hills has many Victorian terraced houses.
