Nutcote

Nutcote is the harbourside home of May Gibbs, author of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. May Gibbs was born in England but moved with her family to Australia when she was four. Growing up in Western Australia, May grew a fondness for the Australian bush.

By the time May moved to Neutral Bay in Sydney, she had already been publishing cards, artworks and short stories based on characters borne of the Australian bush. It is her home in Neutral Bay that was named Nutcote. The house was originally built in 1925 where May lived for 45 years. The house has now been renovated and commissioned into a House Museum in honour of May Gibbs. The museum contains some of May’s artifacts, art works, early sketches and also houses an education centre with facilities for school children.

Nutcote is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

Nutcote is best accessed via public transport as there is no parking at Nutcote and parking on nearby streets can often be difficult. Bus 225 from Neutral Bay Junction stops at Kurraba Road from where it is a short walk. A 20 minute ferry ride from Circular Quay to Kurraba Road Wharf is also possible followed by a five minute walk. The ferry option will not be suitable for those with walking impediments or small children as there are a large number of steps to climb up to Kurraba Road.
