Newtown is a student area 4km south west of the CBD.
The Newtown area was part of the land of the Cadigal band of the Eora people, who ranged across the entire area from the southern shores of Sydney Harbour to Botany Bay in the south-east and Petersham in the west.
King Street is the main street of Newtown and centre of commercial and entertainment activity with lots of alternative shops and cafes. And due to it's commercial history there are lots of pubs in Newtown.
A major project has been the restoration of the Trocadero dance hall in King Street North opened in 1889 and is one of the last 19th century dance halls in Sydney.
