Australia Day
Celebrated everywhere and lots of flags, green and gold and barbeques. The city organises a number of events and fireworks. So if you are around on 26 January join in the fun.

Australia Fashion Week
A major fashion event at Circular Quay in late April.

Bacardi Latin Festival
The Bacardi Latin Festival in Darling Harbour is held in early January as part of the Sydney Festival, and contains a week of Latin dancing and music.

Biennale of Sydney
A contemporary arts festival held on even numbered years between June and August. Most of the events take places in Sydney museums.

Big Day Out
A music event that happens in various Australian cities including Sydney every January and attracts some well known bands.

Carols in the Domain
The Carols in the Domain are held annually in the Domain on the last Saturday.

City to Surf Run
The largest fun run in the world a 14km run from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach held in cooler August.

Chinese New Year
Sydney has a large Chinese community and so expect colourful parades and performances at the Chinese New Year which falls late January or early February.

Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras
A huge festival organised by and for the queer community. It includes sports, cultural and arts events that run throughout February, culminating in a huge Mardi Gras parade in Darlinghurst on the first Saturday of March each year.

Festival of the Winds
An annual kite festival at Bondi Beach with kite enthusiasts from around the world. Held every September.

Flickerfest
An open air short film festival held every January at Bondi Pavilion.

Good Food Month
October is when the streets come alive with food festivals, farmers markets and wine.

Homebake Festival
An annual rock festival with a number of alternative acts but to qualify they must be Australian and held at the Domain in December.

Manly International Jazz Festival
A well established jazz festival held over the NSW Labour Day Weekend at the end of September.

New Year's Eve
The world famous fireworks happen twice on New Year's Eve and can be seen from the shore or take one of the many boats.

Royal Easter Show
The Royal Easter Show is the major agricultural show and is held in the two weeks before Easter each year at Sydney Olympic Park.

Rugby League State of the Origin
A long running match between Queensland and New South Wales. Players qualify based on where they first played senior rugby and covers three matches and held around June. A series of three matches with at least one played in Sydney, the other in Brisbane.

Sculpture by the Sea
The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk comes alive to an outdoor sculpture gallery every November.

Sydney Festival
The Sydney Festival is an arts festival held in January each year. It aims to be international in reach, inviting acclaimed international artists to exhibit their work or perform in Sydney.

Sydney Fringe Festival
The Sydney Fringe Festival runs from mid-January to mid-February each year, and features fringe art in the form of film, TV, performance and sport.

Sydney Film Festival
The Sydney Film Festival is held in June each year.

Sydney Marathon
Started with the Sydney Olympics and crosses the Sydney Harbour Bridge and takes place in September.

Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race
One of the main yachting races in Australia and starts on Boxing Day.

Sydney Writers Festival
The literary side of Sydney every May and held at Walsh Bay. A lot of the events are free.

Tropfest
The largest short fim festival in the world held on the last Saturday in February in the Domain.
