Department Stores

Historically Australia, and in particular Sydney, has two major and household name department store chains - David Jones and Myer-Grace Bros.

David Jones has been around since 1838 when Welsh-born immigrant David Jones opened his first store in Sydney. David Jones since grew to be a national household name with stores in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. David Jones remains the oldest department store in the world still trading under its original name. Today, David Jones prides itself on offering world class products to shoppers with discerning tastes. The David Jones Elizabeth Street and Market Street stores are jointly considered to be the flagship store.

Brothers Albert Edward and Joseph Neal Grace founded Grace Bros in Sydney, in 1885. Grace Bros grew to be a large department store chain in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. In 1983, Myer bought the Grace Bros chain. The former Grace Bros stores added to the already vast Myer chain creating the now largest chain of department stores in Australia. Today, Myer offers a wide range of products including men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, home wares, electrical, furniture and bedding. The Myer flagship store can be found on Bourke Street.
