Bondi is Australia 's most famous beach and the nearest ocean beach to the centre of Sydney, only eight kilometres distant. The Surf Life Saving Club dates from 1906, only four years after the ban on daylight bathing in urban areas was lifted in Sydney, and it is one of the country's oldest.
Bondi members invented the surf reel and many other icons of lifesaving. The popular TV show Bondi Rescue is filmed on Bondi Beach. There is an underwater shark net set up during the summer months.
An Oceanway connects Bondi to South Head to the north and other beaches to the south up to Coogee. Bondi Beach has a commercial area along Campbell Parade and adjacent side streets. Hotel Bondi is a famous landmark opposite the beach featuring a number of popular bars and restaurants.
