Rugby League State Of Origin

Sydney sightseeing

New South Wales and Queensland need to prove which is the best at rugby league and they battle it out every year in State Of Origin.

The Rugby League State Of Origin series consists of three matches, every year one or two of these take place in Sydney, New South Wales. When it is the Blues' home game it is played at ANZ Stadium, at Sydney's Olympic Park. When the Maroons are the home team the venue is Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

The State Of Origin matches usually take place in the months of May and June. The largest State of Origin crowd at ANZ Stadium was 88,336. The first time NSW played at the venue was 1999.

While Queensland has an edge in the overall series over the past three decades, New South Wales have an advantage when playing at ANZ Stadium in front of their home crowd. The Blues have won around two thirds of the games played at ANZ Stadium, while there was also one game that ended in a draw.

Fans looking for a different experience at the State Of Origin at ANZ Stadium can look into the various hospitality packages that are available. Private suites and corporate boxes allow you to watch the contest in luxury. Many fans would prefer the front row, to be closer to the noise and the action.

The key to the success of Rugby League State Of Origin was the rule change for how players were allocated to each state. When the rule was changed that the player was tied to the state where he first played senior rugby it made the NSW versus Queensland games a more even contest.

Some of the winners of the Man of the Match award include Mal Meninga, Wally Lewis, Chris Close, Peter Sterling, Steve Mortimer, Allan Langer, Sam Backo, Martin Bella, Benny Elias, Ricky Stuart, Andrew Johns, Laurie Daley, Wendell Sailor, Gorden Tallis, Billy Slater, Greg Inglis and Israel Folau.

Dale Shearer, Michael O’Connor and Allan Langer are the only players in State Of Origin history to have ten or more tries. Mal Meninga, of Queensland, is far ahead of any other player for total points scored with 161. Wally Lewis is the leader when it comes to being captain, he did it thirty times.
