Hyde Park

Sydney sightseeing

Hyde Park is the main garden feature in the centre of Sydney central business district. Although it is surpassed by the larger Botanic Gardens, Hyde Park's location makes it central to office workers who are desperate to escape their cooped up high-risers, and laze under shady trees on green grass.

Hyde Park is located on Elizabeth Street, and if you've ever caught a bus to the eastern suburbs you would have probably waited next to the park, or even sat on the supporting brick wall. Hyde Park takes over this area of Sydney with elegance and natural beauty. The main features are the massive fig trees which have been established there for centuries and proudly contribute to the beautiful and historic city of Sydney.

During the week, especially around lunchtime, you'll struggle to find a patch of vacant green grass for yourself. Office workers alone, and in groups, flock to the park with their coffees and lunches, and occasionally a group will start a small game of Frisbee or ball.

At nights, especially in summer, Hyde Park transforms with nightlife including noodle-markets or outdoor theatre performance. You can also find art exhibitions displayed amongst the trees, and the prolific war memorial offers a chance to recognise and remembers friends or family members who have served or lost their life, for their country. You are even able to extend the tradition of choosing a gold star, writing the name of your loved one on it, and throwing it into a well, as an act of remembrance.

Hyde Park is a significant outdoor feature for Sydney city, and if you venture anywhere near the city area it is hard to miss, or not be attracted to the hanging trees, and soft, lush grasses. Walk through the pedestrian avenues, and you will experience the magic of this unique and cherished, inner-city location.
